5 Ways to Be More Photogenic at Your Engagement or Family Shoot
For most of us who aren’t models, the thought of having our picture taken can feel pretty daunting. Questions like (What do I wear? How should I smile? Do I have a good side?) are probably running through your head. No need to panic, I’ve compiled a list of the 5 most important things that I believe will make you look and feel more natural in front of the camera. Therefore making you more photogenic for your engagement or family shoot.
Relax. This may sound easier than it is once you’re in the spotlight. When we as humans get nervous, our breath shortens and our faces tense up, leading to an uncomfortable look and forced smile. Try taking some deep cleansing breaths in-between shots and focus more on who you're being photographed with. Let the joy and love your family or partner brings to you, fill you up with lightness. This will help your body stay calm while bringing joy and a sense of brightness to your face. If you’re the only one being photographed you can take this same practice to your shoot by thinking of anything or anyone that would yield the same feeling and relaxing results.
Make Shapes. Visually speaking when we make shapes with our body we tend to appear more interesting in photographs. You all may remember or have done it, the old stick one leg out and drop your hip? Well, it’s kinda along those lines. Trust that your photographer knows what they’re doing and let them guide you into a few poses that may not feel 100 percent natural but will look and feel that way through the lens.
Wear Clothes That Fit. I love a big flowy top as much as the rest of you but in the camera’s eye, clothing that's too loose with no shape takes away the shapes I mentioned previously and can make your body appear distorted.
Wear Clothes That You’re Comfortable In. This is important even in your day-to-day life! When you feel good in what you're wearing, you tend to shine a bit brighter. Not having to deal with clothing that is uncomfortable or annoying will make for a better shoot and a better day.
Trust Your Photographer. You searched for them, vetted them, and or possibly have worked with them in the past. Let them create the memories for you that you hired them to do and enjoy the shoot!
